Wisdom From Our Scriptures
New stories added regularly, retelling well known and lesser known episodes from our scriptures, along with reflections for everyday life.

Hanuman's Leap Across the Ocean

The Retelling

The Vanar army stood at the southern shore, staring at an ocean that seemed to mock every plan they had. Somewhere across that endless water lay Lanka, and somewhere in Lanka sat Sita, waiting. One by one, the mighty warriors were asked how far they could leap. Angad could go far. Others could go further. But none could cross the entire sea.

Then Jambavan turned to Hanuman, who sat quietly to one side, unaware of his own power. "You have forgotten who you are," Jambavan said. He reminded Hanuman of the boons given to him as a child, the strength coiled inside him that a curse had made him forget until this exact moment. Hanuman rose. His body began to grow, mountain sized, blazing with a golden light. And with a roar that shook the shore, he leapt.

Midair, the ocean itself rose to test him. Mainak mountain offered him rest, he refused, there was no time to pause. Surasa the sea serpent opened her jaws wide as a challenge, he shrank himself and passed through her mouth before she could close it, a lesson in matching wit to obstacle rather than force to force. Simhika grabbed his shadow, pulling him down, and he tore through her and kept flying. Nothing stopped him because nothing could hold his focus once he remembered what he carried inside him and why he was flying.

He landed in Lanka, found Sita in the Ashoka grove, delivered Ram's message and Ram's ring, and set the city ablaze on his way out, all in a single, unbroken act of devotion.

The Universal Pattern

Every one of us has, at some point, been Hanuman before Jambavan's reminder. Sitting quietly at the edge of an ocean we assume we cannot cross. Underestimating a strength we were simply never told we had, or that we forgot somewhere along the way, weighed down by self doubt, criticism, or years of being told to sit still.

The obstacles in the story are not random either. Mainak offers comfortable rest exactly when momentum matters most. Surasa demands you fight her on her terms. Simhika attacks not your body but your shadow, the unseen parts of yourself that quietly hold you back. Every leap toward something meaningful in life brings some version of these three.

The Modern Mirror

A woman in her forties decides, after years of putting it off, to finally go back and finish the degree she abandoned in her twenties. Her ocean is not water, it is fear of failing publicly at something she should have "already done." Her Mainak is the comfortable voice that says wait one more year, it is not the right time yet. Her Surasa is a well meaning relative asking why she needs a degree at her age, forcing her to justify herself on someone else's terms instead of her own. Her Simhika is the quiet, private shame she carries about the years she "lost," pulling at her shadow self more than her actual ability.

She finishes the degree in two years, working full time, raising two children. When asked how, she says simply, I stopped waiting to feel ready and started moving.

This Week's Reflection

Where in your life right now are you sitting at Hanuman's shore, aware of an ocean, but not yet reminded of your own strength? Name one small leap you can take this week, not the whole ocean, just the first push off the ground.
